Drain Cleaning
A slow drain is annoying. A drain that keeps backing up is usually a sign there’s something more going on.
Hair, grease, soap scum, and everyday buildup can all collect inside your pipes over time. Here on the Outer Banks, sand and grit can find their way into plumbing too. And in some older homes, tree roots may work their way into underground lines and cause recurring problems.
R.A. Hoy provides professional drain cleaning for homeowners throughout the Outer Banks. Instead of just getting the water moving again and calling it a day, we’ll work to figure out what’s causing the blockage in the first place.
Depending on what we find, that may mean traditional drain clearing, hydro jetting, or using a camera to get a better look inside the line.

Drain Inspection & Repair
Not every clog is the same, and the right fix depends on what’s actually happening inside your pipes.
For stubborn or recurring drain problems, we can use a camera inspection to look inside the line and pinpoint where the blockage is coming from. That helps us see whether we’re dealing with everyday buildup, tree roots, a damaged pipe, or something else entirely.
Once we know what’s going on, we can recommend the right way to clear it. For heavier buildup, hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to clean the inside of the pipe more thoroughly than a standard drain snake.
The goal isn’t just to get your drain moving today. We want to help keep you from dealing with the same clog again a few weeks from now.

FAQs
Will professional drain cleaning damage my pipes?
When it’s done correctly and the right method is used for your plumbing, professional drain cleaning is safe for most residential pipes. That’s also why we don’t take the same approach with every drain. Older or already-damaged pipes may need to be handled differently than newer plumbing that’s in good condition. We’ll consider the condition of the line before deciding whether traditional drain clearing, hydro jetting, or another approach makes the most sense.
Can I use a store-bought drain cleaner instead of calling a plumber?
For a minor clog, it’s tempting to grab a bottle of chemical drain cleaner and hope for the best. The problem is that those products don’t always reach or fully remove the blockage, especially when the clog is farther down the line or caused by something like tree roots. Harsh chemicals can also be tough on some older plumbing materials and may create an additional safety concern if the drain still needs to be professionally cleared afterward. If the drain keeps clogging or isn’t responding to basic fixes, it’s usually better to find out what’s actually causing the problem.
How often should my drains be professionally cleaned?
There’s no perfect schedule for every home. Some homeowners may go years without needing professional drain cleaning, while others deal with buildup more often depending on how the plumbing is used. Kitchen lines that see a lot of grease or homes with mature trees near the sewer line may need more attention. The bigger thing to watch for is a pattern. If the same drain is clogging every few months, there’s probably a reason, and a camera inspection can help us find it.
