Frozen/Burst Pipe
Hard freezes don’t happen all that often on the Outer Banks, but when they do, your plumbing can take a hit.
Homes here can be especially vulnerable because many are built on piers or have plumbing running through crawl spaces where pipes are more exposed to cold temperatures. Outdoor hose bibs and other exposed lines can freeze quickly too, especially if they aren’t properly insulated.
If a pipe freezes or bursts, R.A. Hoy is here to help. Our plumbers serve homeowners throughout the Outer Banks and arrive prepared with common parts so we can stop the leak, repair the damaged pipe, and get your water back on as quickly as possible.
And because burst pipes don’t wait for regular business hours, we offer 24/7 availability for plumbing emergencies.

Frozen/Burst Pipe Inspection & Repair
A burst pipe can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time, so the first priority is finding the break and stopping the water.
Once the leak is under control, we’ll repair or replace the damaged section of pipe and check the surrounding plumbing for other areas that may have been affected by the freeze.
That’s especially important after a hard cold snap. If one exposed pipe froze, there’s a chance another nearby line was exposed to the same conditions. We’d rather catch it while we’re already there than have you dealing with another burst pipe a few days later.

FAQs
What causes pipes to freeze and burst on the Outer Banks?
It usually comes down to exposure. Pipes underneath pier-built homes, inside unheated crawl spaces, and around outdoor fixtures are more exposed to freezing temperatures than plumbing inside the conditioned areas of your home. Even a relatively short cold snap can be enough to freeze an uninsulated line. Vacation and second homes can be especially vulnerable if they’re sitting empty when temperatures suddenly drop.
How can I protect my plumbing before a cold snap?
A little preparation can make a big difference. Start by insulating exposed pipes in crawl spaces and underneath your home. Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, and during a hard freeze, allowing faucets to drip slightly can help keep water moving through vulnerable lines. If your Outer Banks home will be empty during the winter, keeping the thermostat set to at least the mid-50s can also help protect interior plumbing.
What should I do if I find a frozen pipe before it bursts?
If you can safely access your main water shutoff, it’s a good idea to know where it is in case the pipe has already cracked. You can try gently warming a frozen section with a hair dryer or heating pad, but never use an open flame. Pipes can split while they’re frozen and begin leaking once they thaw, so keep an eye on the area as it warms. If you can’t find the frozen section, notice a crack, or aren’t comfortable thawing it yourself, call a plumber before a small problem turns into a much bigger leak.
