Dual Fuel Hybrid Systems in Kitty Hawk & Outer Banks, NC
Outer Banks winters can be unpredictable. One week might be mild, and the next can bring a cold snap with temperatures dipping into the 20s. A dual fuel hybrid system gives your home the flexibility to handle both without you having to think about switching between heating sources.
R.A. Hoy installs and services dual fuel systems for homeowners in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and surrounding Outer Banks communities. These systems combine an electric heat pump with a gas furnace and automatically use whichever heating source makes the most sense for the temperature outside.
During the milder weather we see for much of the winter, the heat pump handles the heating. When temperatures really drop, the gas furnace takes over. The switch happens automatically, so you can simply set your thermostat and let the system do the rest.
If you’re comparing a dual fuel system with a traditional heat pump or furnace, R.A. Hoy can help you understand the differences and what makes the most sense for your Kitty Hawk home. Reach out to schedule an assessment, and we’ll walk through your home’s heating needs, current setup, and budget to help you find the right fit.

Dual Fuel System Installations
Every home is different, especially here on the coast. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to dual fuel systems.
We’ll look at your home’s square footage, insulation, heating and cooling needs, and even how exposed the property is to wind off the water. From there, we’ll help you choose and install a system that’s properly sized for your home.
If you’re deciding between a dual fuel system, traditional heat pump, or furnace, we’ll also walk you through the differences so you can choose what makes the most sense for your home and budget.
Dual Fuel System Inspections & Repairs
Because a dual fuel system combines a heat pump and gas furnace, there are a few more moving parts to keep an eye on.
If your home isn’t heating properly or the system doesn’t seem to be switching between the heat pump and furnace when it should, our technicians can take a look. We’ll inspect both sides of the system, check the switchover controls, and figure out what’s keeping everything from working together properly.
We’ll explain what we find and talk through your options before moving forward with any repairs.
Dual Fuel System Maintenance
The key to a dual fuel system is making sure both heating sources are ready when you need them.
During routine maintenance, we’ll check the heat pump, refrigerant levels, furnace burner operation, and the thermostat settings that control when the system switches between electric and gas heat.
Keeping up with both sides of the system helps make sure that when temperatures suddenly drop, your furnace is ready to step in.
Heating That Keeps Up With Outer Banks Weather
A dual fuel system gives you the best of both worlds: efficient electric heating during our milder winter days and gas heat when colder weather moves in.
And you don’t have to watch the forecast and decide when to make the switch. Once the system is properly set up, it handles that for you.

FAQs
How does a dual fuel system know when to switch from the heat pump to the furnace?
The system uses the outdoor temperature and a preset balance point to determine which heating source should be running.
That balance point is typically somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees, depending on the equipment and how the system is set up. When temperatures are above that point, the heat pump does the work. Once it gets colder, the furnace takes over.
The best part is that the switch happens automatically, so there’s nothing you need to change yourself.
Is a dual fuel system worth it in a climate as mild as the Outer Banks?
It can be, but it really depends on your home.
If you already have gas service and want the efficiency of a heat pump during our milder weather with gas heat available for those colder nights, a dual fuel system may be a great fit.
If your home doesn’t have access to gas, a traditional heat pump with electric backup may make more sense. We’ll look at your home’s setup and talk through the options rather than recommending a system that doesn’t make sense for you.
What maintenance does a dual fuel system need?
Since you’re working with both a heat pump and a furnace, both sides of the system need routine attention.
In addition to the usual heat pump and furnace maintenance, we’ll check the controls that determine when your system switches between electric and gas heat. We’ll also make sure the balance point is set correctly so your system isn’t using the furnace when the heat pump could be doing the job efficiently.
