Trap and Pipe Cleaning
A sink that takes forever to drain usually doesn’t become slow overnight. Most of the time, grease, hair, soap scum, and everyday debris have been building up inside the trap or drainpipe little by little.
Eventually, enough buildup collects that water has nowhere to go.
R.A. Hoy provides trap and pipe cleaning for homeowners throughout the Outer Banks. Whether your kitchen sink is draining a little slower than usual or your bathroom sink has stopped draining altogether, we can find the blockage and get things moving again.
And since we’re already taking a look under the sink, we’ll also keep an eye out for loose connections, corrosion, or small leaks that could turn into a bigger headache later.

Trap and Pipe Cleaning: Installations
The curved section of pipe underneath your sink is called a P-trap, and it’s a pretty common place for clogs to form.
In the kitchen, grease and food debris can slowly collect inside the pipe. In the bathroom, it’s more likely to be hair, soap, and other buildup. Over time, that buildup narrows the opening until you’re left watching water slowly circle the drain.
We’ll clear the P-trap and connected piping to get the water flowing properly again. If the clog turns out to be farther down the drain line, we can take a closer look and figure out what’s causing it rather than stopping at the trap.

FAQs
Why does the pipe under my sink keep clogging?
Usually, it comes down to what’s making its way down the drain over time. Kitchen sinks tend to collect grease, oils, and food debris, while bathroom sinks are more likely to deal with hair, soap, and personal care products. That buildup can stick to the inside of the P-trap and nearby piping, gradually making the opening smaller and smaller. If you’re clearing the same clog repeatedly, though, there may be something happening farther down the line that’s worth checking.
Can I clean a P-trap myself?
For some homeowners, yes. If the P-trap is easy to reach and in good condition, removing and cleaning it can be a manageable DIY project. But older plumbing can make a simple job more complicated. A corroded trap may crack or start leaking when it’s removed, and if the blockage is actually farther down the drain line, cleaning the trap won’t solve the problem. If you’re not comfortable taking the plumbing apart or the clog keeps coming back, it’s probably time to call a plumber.
How often should traps and pipes be cleaned?
There really isn’t a set schedule. Instead, pay attention to how your drains are behaving. If a sink that normally drains quickly starts slowing down, that’s usually your first clue that buildup is forming. Taking care of it while the water is still moving is a lot easier than waiting until you’re dealing with a sink full of water that won’t drain at all.
